Spanish beach holidays in the UK at least are often sometimes sneered at. Cheap, tacky resorts, booze, neon lit strip but it's good to challenge pre-conceptions. We recently enjoyed a short break to the Balearic island of Menorca after a few personal recommendations as well as a review in Conde Nast Traveller and were blown away by its beauty. Remarkably tourist free and overlooked, stunning turquoise sea, this island is being touted as the next Ibiza (without all the clubs, cost and hordes). A few tips: rent a car, most of the best spots are spaced apart. The roads are very quiet which is a bonus. Try OK rent a car. Hotel selection was not inspiring if you prefer something a bit less commercial. The handful there were - were small, booked up and relatively expensive. An apartment rental via Airbnb is preferable and it allows you to use cook your own meals using the tasty local fruit and vegetables. Make sure to visit Ciutadella. It's a stunning town with beautiful 17th century Italian architecture, nice shops, a marina and is perfect for strolling around in the evenings.
